1,2-Pentanediol

1,2-Pentanediol is primarily used in skincare products as a humectant, solubilizer, and emollient, and it’s relatively low in irritation. 1,2-Pentanediol has a preservative effect in skincare products and is an excellent small molecule humectant. A synthetic humectant, it can enhance the effectiveness of preservatives and reduce preservative-induced skin allergies. As an important intermediate for the fungicide propiconazole, 1,2-Pentanediol exhibits antimicrobial activity, offers formulation flexibility, and is unaffected by temperature, hydrolysis, and pH. It is a key cosmetic preservative and is widely used in both leave-on and rinse-off products. Furthermore, it enhances the water resistance of sunscreen formulations, a crucial property. It can be used as a humectant in combination with glycerin or sorbitol in cosmetics, toothpaste, and soaps.
